Blackwater Bog

Zwischen Shannonbridge (Droichead na Sionainne) und Bellmount erstreckt sich ein riesiges Moor an beiden Seiten des Flusses Blackwater. In diesem Moor wird Torf abgebaut, der dann zum Erzeugen von Strom in Wärmekraftwerken verwendet wird. Als besondere Attraktion gibt es einen kleinen Zug (eine Lok und ein Anhänger), der eine etwa 9 Kilometer lange Strecke durch das Moor fährt. Während der Fahrt erfahren wir einiges über das Moor, seine Entstehung und den Torfabbau.
Die Eisenbahn wurde aber 2008 stillgelegt, da sie dem weiteren Torfabbau im Wege stand.
Between Shannonbridge (Droichead na Sionainne) and Bellmount a large bog spreads along both sides of the Blackwater River. In this bog peat is cut, which is used to generate electricity in thermal power stations. As a special attraction there is a little train (an engine and one wagon), going round a railway through the bog for about 9 kilometres. During the ride we learn about the bog, about its origin and about cutting the peat.
The railway however was shut down in 2008 as it was in the way of further peat cutting.
