Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwarf und baute William Parsons, der 3. Earl of Rosse, (finanziert von seiner Frau Mary) "Leviathan" das damals größte Teleskop der Welt. Und das blieb es für die nächsten 80 Jahre. Parsons entdeckte damit 1845 die Spiralstruktur der Galaxy M51 und auch die Marskanäle wurden damit zum ersten Mal gesichtet.

In der Nähe stehen zwei Meridiansteine, die zum Ausrichten des Teleskopes verwendet wurden. Eine kleine Pflanzung wurde am 150. Jahrestag zur Erinnerung an William Parsons Entdeckung in Form der Galaxy M51 angelegt. (Beides gibt auf Fotos aber nicht viel her.)

In the middle of the 19^th century William Parsons, the 3^rd Earl of Rosse, (financed by his wife Mary) built "Leviathan" which was at that time the larges telescope all over the world. And it kept that ranking for the next 80 years. With it, Parsons discovered the spiral structure of the galaxy M51 in 1845, and also the channels of Mars were seen through it for the first time.

Near by there are two Meridian Stones that were used to align the telescope. A small plantation in the form of the galaxy M51 was created on the 150^th anniversary in memory of William Parsons's discovery. (Both are however not very representive on photos.)
