An der Stelle von Birr (Biorra) Castle stand früher eine Anglo-Normannische Festung aus dem 12. Jahrhundert im Besitz der O'Carrolls. 1620 kam die Festung und das umliegende Land in den Besitz von Laurence Parsons, der die Festung zu einem Schloss erweitern ließ. Seither ist es der prunkvolle Sitz der Familie Parsons, der Earls und Countesses of Rosse.
Der prachtvolle Garten (etwa 50 Hektar groß) von Birr Castle wurde über die Jahrhunderte von den Mitgliedern der Familie Parsons immer wieder gestaltet und erweitert, wobei Michael, der 6. Earl of Rosse, und seine Frau Anne speziell erwähnt werden. Viele der 2000 Pflanzenarten wurden von den Earls of Rosse von ihren Reisen um die Welt mitgebracht.
Für uns als Techniker ist aber auch interessant, dass einige Mitglieder der Parsons Familie technisch sehr begabt waren und ihre Errungenschaften hier zu sehen sind.
On the place of Birr (Biorra) Castle there once was an Anglo-Norman stronghold from the 12th century owned by the O'Carrolls. In 1620 the stronghold and the surrounding land came into the possession of Laurence Parsons, who had the stronghold expanded to a castle. Since then it is the splendid residence of the family Parsons, the Earls and Countesses of Rosse.
The magnificent garden (about 50 hectars in size) was created and expanded during the centuries past by the members of the family Parsons, at which Michael, the 6th Earl of Rosse, and his wife Anne are specially mentioned. Many of the 2000 species of plants were brought back by the Earl of Rosses from their travels around the world.
For us engineers it is also of interest that some members of the Parsons family were technically gifted and that their achievements can be seen here.
