The next big town north of Lough Mask is Mayo's capital town Castlebar (Caisleán an Bharraigh), where Michael Davitt founded the "Land League" in 1879, which called for passive resistance against the English. Victim of the first trial of strength was Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott.

Boycott supervised the property of Lord Erne in the town Ballinrobe (Baile an Róba, east of Lough Mask). In the autumn of 1880, the renters asked for a reduction of their payments because of a bad harvest. Boycott refused and wanted - as it was the custom - to exile the dilatory payers from their leasehold. But instead of silently give in to their fate, all of the renters refused helping with the getting in of the harvest. The servants, shepherds and stablemen left him. The traders, smiths and craftsmen did not sell him anything nor lifted a finger for him.

He asked the British government for help and got soldiers to help him with the farm work. But these helpers did not fare any better - the traders did not sell anything to them, either. And so they had to eat the new harvest, slaughtered the cattle and felled the trees for their fires. Completely ruined, Boycott left Ireland and died impoverished in England.

But hence the "boycott" was born and under this pressure the British government initiated reforms.
