Normannische Motte / Norman Motte

Als sich die Normannen in Clones niederließen, erbauten sie 1212 eine Festung (Motte und Bailey), wie auch sonst überall im Land. Die Motte in Clones ist aber nicht nur ein einfacher Erdhügel, sondern weist Terrassen auf. Außerdem gibt es Hinweise, dass sie über einem vorchristlichen Ringfort erbaut wurde. Schon innerhalb eines Jahres wurde sie von irischen Stämmen überrannt.
Die Motte ist ziemlich bewachsen und wir finden und erkennen sie nur weil es Hinweistafeln gibt. Und es ist nicht die einzige Motte in Irland, die ausschaut, als ob auf ihr Jugendliche eine Party gefeiert hätten und vergessen haben ihren Müll zu entfernen.
When the Normans settled in Clones, they built a fort (Motte and Bailey) in 1212, as they did everywhere in the country. The motte of Clones however is not just a simple mound of earth, but also features terraces. Further there are hints that it was built over a pre-Christian ringfort. Within a year it was overrun by Irish clans, though.
The Motte is rather grown over and we find and recognise it only for the sign-boards. And it is not the only motte in Ireland that look as as if some youths had partied and then forget to remove their litter.
