Kirche zum Hl. Columba / St. Columba's Church

Zu Beginn des 9. Jahrhunderts flohen die Mönche der Columbianischen Gemeinschaft vor den Angriffen der Wikinger von der Insel Iona und ließen sich im Kloster von Kells nieder. Doch die Wikinger kamen auch nach Irland, und so wurde die Kirche von Kells mehrfach zerstört und wieder aufgebaut. Aber auch der natürliche Zerfall führten dazu, dass die Kirche immer wieder neu gebaut werden musste. Die letzte Kirche wurde 1778 errichtet, noch ein paar Mal umgebaut und ist bis heute in Betrieb.
At the beginning of the 9th century the monks of the Columbian community fled after attacks by the Vikings from Iona and settled in the monastery of Kells. However, the Vikings also came to Ireland and thus the church was several times destroyed and reconstructed. But also the natural decay made it necessary to rebuilt the church a few times. The last church was erected in 1778, changed a few times and is in operation till now.
