Knowth
Not quite as old as Newgrange are the passage tombs of Knowth from the second half of the third millennium B. C. They lie to the west of the town of Drogheda (Droichead Átha) and were only opened to the public a few years before our visit in 2000. The biggest cairn is 12 metres high, has a diameter of nearly 70 metres and is surrounded by 17 satellite tombs. One fourth of all European megalithic pieces of art are in this place, most of them are decorated stones.
