King John's Castle

Carlingford (Cairlinn) wurde im 12. Jahrhundert von Hugh de Lacy erobert, der um 1200 die strategisch wichtige Position der Stadt durch eine Burg absicherte. Im Jahre 1210 besuchte König John die Burg, die seither seinen Namen trägt. Die Burg wurde bis ins 16. Jahrhundert stückweise erweitert, verfiel jedoch seit dem 18. Jahrhundert. Der Burghof ist nicht öffentlich zugänglich, aber ein Blick durchs Schlüsselloch (modener Technik sei Dank), zeigt, dass es innen auch nicht wirklich was zu sehen gibt. Viel schöner ist der Blick über den Carlingford Lough und die Mourne Bege auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite.

Carlingford (Cairlinn) was conquered in the 12^th century by Hugh de Lacy, who secured the strategically important location of the town by a castle. In 1210 King John visited the castle, which since bears his name. The castle was extended part-by-part until the 16^th century, but left to decay in the 18^th century. The courtyard is not publicly accessible, but a peek through the keyhole (thanks to modern technology) shows that there is nothing of importance to see on the inside anyhow. Much more beautiful is the view from the castle over Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains on the opposite side.
