Die Gegend um Granard (Gránard) war schon in der Bronzezeit besiedelt, die Ortschaft wird erstmals in Schriften aus dem 11. Jahrhundert (wenn auch mit anderer Schreibweise) erwähnt. Um 1200 erbaute der Anglo-Normanne Richard de Tuite auf der höchsten Stelle der Ortschaft eine Befestigungsanlage. Die Invasion Irlands durch den Schotten Edward Bruce in den 1310ern beendete die normannische Herrschaft in der Region. Zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhundert übernahm der Clan O’Farrall/Ó Fearghail (Uí Ferghail) die Regentschaft und Granard wurde zu einem wichtigen Marktplatz. In der Zeit Elisabeth I. eroberten englische Truppen Granard erneut (1580er). Francis Aungier, Baron von Longford ließ im frühen 17. Jahrhundert die Basis für heutige Stadt anlegen - allerdings ca. 1 Kilometer von der mittelalterlichen Ortschaft entfernt.
The area around Granard (Gránard) was already populated in the Bronze Age, the town is mentioned for the first time in documents from the 11th century (albeit with a different spelling). Around 1200 the Anglo-Norman Richard de Tuite built a fortress on the highest location of the town. The invasion by the Scotsman Edward Bruce in the 1310ies ended the Norman dominion of the region. At the beginning of the 15th century the Clan O’Farrall/Ó Fearghail (Uí Ferghail) took over the leadership and Granard became an important market town. During the time of Elizabeth I. English troops reconquered Granard (1580ies). Francis Aungier, Baron of Longford had the base of the current town laid out in the early 17th century - however about 1 kilometre away from the Medieval village.
