Der 8,4 Kilometer lange Zweig des Royal Canals von Aghnaskea in die Stadt Longford wurde 1830 fertiggestellt. Der Kanal war ein bedeutender Faktor in der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung der Stadt, auf dem Passagiere und Waren von und nach Dublin transportiert wurden. In der Zeit der Großen Hungersnot war er auch die beste Möglichkeit um zum Überseehafen in Dublin zu gelangen. Als dann jedoch Longford 1855 Anschluss an das Eisenbahnnetz bekam, verlor der Kanal schnell seine Bedeutung. 1951 kaufte die Stadtverwaltung den Hafen, der später verfüllt wurde. Das Ende des Kanals war früher beim Marktplatz, der verfüllte Teil wurde zum Teil überbaut. Das neue Ende liegt südlich der Eisenbahnstrecke. 2019 wurde beschlossen die Ufer des Kanals für Fußgänger und Radfahrer neu zu gestalten und mit dem Royal Canal Greenway zu verbinden.
The branch of the Royal Canal from Aghnaskea to Longford town with a length of 8.4 kilometres was finished in 1830. The canal was a major factor in the economic development of the town, transporting passengers and goods from and to Dublin. In the times of the Great Famine it was also the best way to reach the oversea port in Dublin. But when Longford got a connection to the railway network in 1855, the canal quickly lost its importance. In 1951 the Urban District Council bought the harbour that later was filled in. The end of the canal was once at the Market Square, the part filled in was partially built over. Today's end lies south of the railroad. In 2019 it was decided to redesign the banks of the canal for walkers and cyclists and it was connected to the Royal Canal Greenway.
