Leuchtturm / Lighthouse

Der Leuchtturm bei Tarbert wurde an der Nordspitze von Tarbert Island gebaut und 1834 in Betrieb genommen. Der ca. 25 Meter hohe Turm half Schiffen auf dem Weg nach und von Limerick eine gefährliche Stelle am Shannon zu erkennen und zu umfahren. Er ist bis heute in Betrieb. Der Großteil der Halbinsel wird vom Tarbert Kraftwerk belegt, wir finden keinen Fußweg zum Leuchtturm. Von der Fähre, die uns von Killimer nach Tarbert bringt, haben wir aber einen guten Blick auf den Turm.

The light house of Tarbert was built on the northern tip of Tarbert Island and started operation in 1834. With its about 25 metres in height the tower helped ships on their way to and from Limerick to recognize and circumvent a dangerous spot along the Shannon. It is still in operation today. The larger part of the peninsula is occupied by the Tarbert Power Plant and we do not find a foot path to the light house. However we have a good view of the tower from the ferry that brings us from Killimer to Tarbert.
