Ardfert Cathedral

(2012-08-23)

St. Brendan the Navigator, who was born in the near-by Fenit, founded a monastery in Ardfert (Ard Fheart) in the 6th century. In the 12th century a cathedral was built in its stead, which was expanded in the 15th century. At the middle of the 17th century the cathedral was burnt down by supporters of Oliver Cromwell and not restored.

Two smaller churches (one Romanesque called Temple-na-hoe, the other rather plain one from the 15th century called Temple-na-Griffin) were also erected on the site of the cathedral.

Alas, due to renovation works we can only see a part of the beautiful Romanesque doorway from the 13th century.
