Dún an Óir

Im Hafen von Smerwick (Ard na Caithne - Anhöhe des Erdbeerbaums) lief im Jahre 1578 ein Schiff auf Grund, das mit 110 Tonnen Golderz aus Kanada beladen war. Es stellt sich jedoch heraus, dass es nicht Gold sondern nur Katzengold (Eisenpyrit) war. Das wertlose Gestein soll zum Erbauen der Festung "Dun an Oir" (Goldfort) verwendet worden sein.

Ein paar Jahre später verschanzten sich Irische Rebellen - unterstützt von Spanischen und Italienischen Soldaten - (insgesamt etwa 600) im Fort. Sie konnten den Englischen Truppen jedoch zu wenig Widerstand leisten und wurden von diesen getötet.

In the harbour of Smerwick (Ard na Caithne - height of the strawberry tree) a ship loaded with 110 tons of gold ore from Canada ran aground in 1578. It turned out that it was not really gold but fool's gold (iron pyrite). It is said that these worthless stones were used to build the fortress "Dun an Oir" (gold fort).

A few years later, Irish rebels - supported by Spanish and Italian soldiers - (about 600 people) used the fort against the English troops. However, their resistance was broken and they were killed by the troops.
