Gap of Dunloe

Das Gap of Dunloe (Kluft von Dunloe, Dún Lóich - das Fort von Lóich) ist ein schmaler Pass zwischen den Macgillycuddy's Reeks (höchster Gipfel 1038 m) und der Purple Mountain Group (höchster Gipfel 832 m). Vom Pass führt ein Tal nach Norden, in dem der Fluss Loe (hAbhainn Lú) durch fünf Seen fließt. Wir beginnen den Aufstieg der Tradition entsprechend bei Kate Kearney's Cottage. Die Straße ist einspurig und nicht besonders gut befestigt, ist aber für Fußgänger und Pferdekutschen ausreichend. Autos dürfen zwar fahren, müssen sich jedoch mit ihrer Geschwindigkeit an die langsameren Verkehrsteilnehmer anpassen.

The Gap of Dunloe (Dún Lóich - the fort of Lóich) is a narrow pass between Macgillycuddy's Reeks (highest peak 1038 m) and the Purple Mountain Range (highest peak 832 m). From the pass a valley leads northwards where the River Loe (hAbhainn Lú) runs through five lakes. We start our ascent according to tradition at Kate Kearney's Cottage. The road is single-tracked and its surface not too well paved, but it is good enough for walkers and jaunting cars. Cars are allowed to drive here but have to adapt their speed to the much slower other road users.
