Die älteste Festung auf dem Hügel war eine Motte, deren Bau dem Normannen Meiler FitzHenry zum Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts zugeschrieben wird. Die erste Erwähnung einer Burg stammt aus dem Jahr 1234, zu dieser Zeit gehörte es der Familie Marshall. Zu Beginn des 14. Jahrhundert ging die Burg in den Besitz der Familie de Bermingham über und durchlebte in den nächsten 150 Jahren immer wieder Angriffe, Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau. Im späten 16. und im 17. Jahrhundert - jetzt im Besitz der Familie Colley - wurden Teile der Burg zu einem befestigten Haus ausgebaut. 1774 gab die Familie das Haus auf und es verfiel.
Wir kommen von Süden zum Hügel, auf dem das Haus steht, in der Hoffnung zur alten Kirche und dann zum Haus zu kommen. Aber eine Herde von Stieren grast zwischen uns und unserem Ziel. Also fordern wir unser Schicksal nicht heraus und geben uns mit Fotos aus der Entfernung zufrieden.

We approach the hill from the south, hoping to go to the old church and then to the house. But a herd of bulls are grazing between us and our destination. So we do not challenge our fate and settle with pictures from afar.
