Kathedrale zur Hl. Brigid / St. Brigid's Cathedral

Im späten 5. Jahrhundert gründete die Hl. Brigid an dieser Stelle ein Kloster. Nach ihrem Tod wurde die alte Holzkirche durch eine steinerne Kirche ersetzt. Diese wurde im ausgehenden 1. Jahrtausend 16 mal zerstört. In den 1220ern wurde eine Kathedrale errichtet, die im Wesentlichen noch heute existiert. Nach der Auflösung aller katholischen Kirchen verfiel die Kathedrale, bis sie im 17. Jahrhundert teilweise restauriert wurde. Am Ende des 19. Jahrhundert wurde sie dann wieder vollständig in Stand gesetzt.
Neben der Kathedrale befinden sich ein altes beschädigtes Hochkreuz und die Überreste eines antiken Feuertempels. In ihm wird am 1. Februar, dem Festtag der Hl. Brigid, ein Feuer entzündet - ein Brauch, der auf vorchristliche Zeit zurückgeht, als hier noch zur Göttin Brigid, der Tochter des Dagda, gebetet wurde.
St. Brigid founded a monastery on this place in the late 5th century. After her death the old wooden church was replaced by a stone church. This church was destroyed 16 times in the declining first millennium. In the 1220s a cathedral was built that basically still exists today. After the dissolving of all Catholic churches, the cathedral fell into ruins, until it was partially restored in the 17th century. It was completely restored at the end of the 19th century.
Beside the cathedral there is an old broken high cross and the remains of an ancient fire temple. On February, 1st, the feast day of St. Brigid, a fire is ignited in it - a tradition going back to pre-Christian times when the goddess Brigid, daughter of Dagda, was worshipped here.
