In den 1820ern wurde der Grand Canal von Shannon Harbour über den Shannon bis nach Ballinasloe verlängert. Die Rund knapp 25 Kilometer lange Strecke wurde in vier Jahren Bauzeit fertiggestellt und wurde zu einer wichtigen Verbindung für den Waren- und Personentransport nach Dublin. Doch nur wenige Jahrzehnte später wurde die Eisenbahn gebaut und der Kanal verlor seine Bedeutung. 1961 wurde er vollständig aufgelassen, der Teil in Ballinasloe wurde zugeschüttet. Nur mehr der Straßenname Canal Drive erinnert an seine ehemalige Existenz.
Der Fluss Suck verband seit jeher Ballinasloe mit dem Shannon. Mit der steigenden Beliebtheit von Hausboottouren wurde er Anfang dieses Jahrhunderts befahrbar gemacht und heute gibt es zwei Anlegestellen in der Stadt. Eine gehört zu einem Hotel, die zweite, größere befindet sich fast schon im Stadtzentrum. Sie ist auch das Ende des schiffbaren Teils des Flusses.
In the 1820ies the Grand Canal was extended from Shannon Harbour across the Shannon until Ballinasloe. The roughly 25 kilometres long reach was finished after a construction time of four years and became a significant connection for the transport of goods and persons to Dublin. But only a few decades later the railway was built and the canal lost its importance. In 1961 it was completely closed, the part in Ballinasloe was filled in. Only the street name Canal Drive reminds of its former existence.
Since the beginning the River Suck has been connecting Ballinasloe with the Shannon. With the increasing popularity of houseboat tours it was made fit for boats at the beginning of this century and today there are two moorings in the town. One belongs to a hotel, the second larger one is almost in the centre of the town. It is also the end of the navigable part of the river.
