Ballinasloe (Béal Átha na Sluaighe, Mündung der Furt der Massen) bekam ihren Namen durch die Lage an einer historischen Furt über den Fluss Suck. Die Gegend ist schon seit der Bronzezeit besiedelt, die Stadt hat jedoch ihren Ursprung in der Gründung durch den Normannen Richard Mór de Burgh im frühen 13. Jahrhundert.
Wir bleiben nur kurz in Ballinasloe stehen, um ein paar Besorgungen zu machen, aber wir nutzen die Gelegenheit um uns zumindest das Stadtzentrum anzusehen, das im 18. und 19 Jahrhundert angelegt wurde. Zum Beispiel die katholische Kirche zu St. Michael, die in den 1850ern gebaut wurde und eine nur 50 Jahre ältere, aber kleinere Kirche ersetzte. Die Beschreibungen heben vor allem die Glasfenster von Harry Clarke und Patrick Pollen hervor. Einige der sehr realistischen Figuren des Kreuzweges um die Kirche bereiten uns alleine beim Hinsehen schon Schmerzen.
An dieser Stelle ein spätes "Danke schön" an das Personal des Portiuncula University Hospital, das sich hervorragend um die Wehwechen von Fremden kümmert und damit den Rest unseren Urlaubs rettet.
Ballinasloe (Béal Átha na Sluaighe, mouth of the ford of the crowds) got its name from the location on an ancient ford over the River Suck. The area has been settled since the Bronze Age, but the town has its origin in the foundation by the Norman Richard Mór de Burgh in the early 13th century.
We only stop briefly in Ballinasloe to run some errands, but we use the opportunity to have at least a look at the town centre that way laid out in the 18th and 19th century. Like the Catholic St. Michael's Church that was built in the 1850ies and replaced an only 50 years elder, but smaller church. The descriptions especially praise the stained glass windows by Harry Clarke and Patrick Pollen. Some of the very realistic figures of the Way of the Cross around the church make use hurt only by looking at them.
At this point a late "Thank you" to the staff of Portiuncula University Hospital, who excellently take care of the ailments of strangers and thereby save the rest of our vacation.
