Kirche zur Hl. Maria / St. Mary's Church

Die Tradition der Marienverehrung geht in Athenry bis auf das Jahr 1249 zurück, in dem die Jungfrau am 15. August einem verwundeten Soldaten nach der Schlacht von Athenry erschienen sein soll. So wurde hier um diese Zeit auch die Stiftskirche zur Hl. Maria erbaut, die zur Pfarrkirche des Ortes wurde. Wie der Rest von Athenry wurde sie im 16. Jahrhundert zerstört. 1828 wurde daneben eine neue Kirche von der Church of Ireland erbaut.

The tradition of Marian devotion in Athenry goes back to the year 1249 when it was reported that the Virgin appeared on August, 15th to a solder wounded in the Battle of Athenry. Around that time St. Mary's Collegiate Church was built, which became the parish church of the town. It was like the rest of Athenry destroyed in the 16th century. In 1828 a new church was erected by the Church of Ireland beside the old one.
The Heritage Centre of Athenry can be found beside the church.
