Galway

Bereits in vorgeschichtlicher Zeit besiedelt, erlebte die Stadt Galway (Gaillimh) im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert unter den Anglo-Normannen einen Aufschwung. Im Laufe der Geschichte wurde sie mehrfach durch Feuer oder kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen zerstört, jedoch immer wieder neu aufgebaut und verdankte ihren Reichtum als Hafen dem Handel mit Europa.

Heute ist Galway die drittgrößte Stadt der Republik Irland (nach Dublin und Cork), die Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Galway, Universitätsstadt, Bischofssitz und Kulturstadt. Regelmäßige Veranstaltungen wie die Galway Races und das Galway Arts Festival, der Reichtum an Geschichte und modernen Freizeiteinrichtungen, ziehen sowohl Iren als auch Touristen aus aller Welt hierher.

Populated already in pre-history times, the city of Galway (Gaillimh) boomed in the 12^th and 13^th century under the Anglo-Normans. In the course of history it was destroyed a few times by fire or by battles, but rebuilt again and again and owed its wealth as harbour to the trade with Europe.

Today Galway is the third largest city of the Republic Ireland (after Dublin and Cork), the capital of the county with the same name, a university town, seat of the bishop and a town of culture. Regular events like the Galway Races and the Galway Arts Festival, its richness of history and contemporary leisure centres draw in people from Ireland as well as from all around the world.
