Downpatrick

Die Gegend von Downpatrick (Dún Phádraig - Festung des Patrick) ist schon seit der Steinzeit gesiedelt. Auf dem Hügel, auf dem sich heute die Kathedrale erhebt, stand schon sehr früh eine Festung, wie Berichte aus der Römzerzeit (2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) belegen. Vom 7. Jahrhundert an herrschte der Clan Dál Fiatach von hier aus, bis er Endes des 12. Jahrhunderts vom Normannen John de Courcy vertrieben wurde. Während der nächsten Jahrhunderte fanden hier immer wieder Kämpfe zwischen Irischen Stämmen und den Anglo-Normannen statt, die dann in die Kämpfe zwischen Katholiken und Protestanten übergingen.

The area of Downpatrick (Dún Phádraig - fortress of Patrick) has been populated since the Stone Age. On the hill, where today the cathedral arises, there already was a fortress in very early times, as records from Roman time (2^nd century A.D.) prove. From the 7^th century on the clan Dál Fiatach ruled from here, until they were driven away by the Norman John de Courcy in the 12^th century. During the centuries to follow there were again and again fights between the Irish clans and the Anglo-Normans, which continued in the fights between Catholics and Protestants.
