Die Stadt Donegal (Dun na nGall, die Festung der Fremden) liegt an der Mündung des Flusses Eske in der gleichnamigen Grafschaft. Donegal (oder wie es damals hieß Tyrconnell - Tír Chonaill - Land des Conall) wurde ab dem 15. Jahrhundert vom Clan der O'Donnells regiert. Unter ihrer Herrschaft wurde die Stadt mit einer Burg befestigt und die Abtei erbaut. (Ein Sproß der Familie, Maximilian Karl Lamoral O'Donnell, rettete einmal das Leben des Kaisers von Österreich.) Nachdem die Engländer die irischen Clans 1601 besiegt hatten, gingen die Clanführer ins Exil (Die Flucht der Grafen). Donegal wurde Basil Brooke zugesprochen, der die Stadt um den zentralen Platz (The Diamond) neu plante.

Donegal (Dun na nGall, the fortress of the strangers) town lies at the mouth of the river Eske in the county of the same name. Donegal (or as it was named then Tyrconnell - Tír Chonaill - Land of Conall) was ruled from the 15^th century onward by the clan of the O'Donnells. Under their rulership the town was protected by a castle and also the abbey was built. (A scion of the family, Maximilian Karl Lamoral O'Donnell, even once saved the life of the Austrian emperor.) After the English had defeted the Irish clans in 1601, the leaders of the clans went into exile (The Flight of the Earls). Donegal was granted to Basil Brooke, who planned the town around a central place (The Diamond).
