Newcastle-Lyons
Schon vor der Ankunft der Normannen gab es im heutigen Newcastle (An Caisleán Nua) eine frühchristliche Siedlung. Als die Normannen das Land eroberten, errichteten sie eine Motte zur Befestigung. Den keltischen Siedlungsnamen "Liamain" änderten sie zu "Lyons" und fügten "Newcastle" hinzu.
Im beginnenden 13. Jahrhundert übernahmen die Engländer die Macht und Newcastle wurde eine wohlhabende Stadt. Um den Reichtum zu schützen, wurden gegen Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts sechs befestigte Turmhäuser erbaut. Nachdem die Stadt katholische Rebellen unterstützt hatte, wurde sie 1642 vom Graf von Ormonde zerstört und verlor ihre Bedeutung.
Even before the arrival of the Normans there was an early Christian settlement in todays Newcastle (An Caisleán Nua). When the Normans conquered the area, they built a motte for fortification. They changed the Celtic name of the settlement "Liamain" to "Lyons" and added "Newcastle".
In the beginning 13th century English forces took over the power and Newcastle became a wealthy town. To protect the wealth, six fortified tower houses were built at the end of the 14th century. After the town had supported Catholic rebels, it was destroyed by the Count of Ormonde in 1642 and lost its importance.
