James Joyce Turm / James Joyce Tower

James Joyce lässt seinen Roman Ulysses in diesem Martello Turm in Sandycove beginnen, in dem er für einige Tage wohnte, kurz bevor er Irland verließ. Der damalige Mieter deses Turms, Oliver St. John Gogarty, war ein Bekannter von Joyce. Er war auch die Vorlage für die Romanfigur Buck Mulligan.

1954 kaufte der Architekt Michael Scott den Turm. Gemeinsam mit Freunden gründete er ein Musuem für James Joyce, das am Bloomsday - den 16. Juni - 1962 eröffnet wurde. Das Musuem kann auch heute noch besucht werden. Eintritt frei - eine kleine Spende wird gerne genommen. Die Sammlung ist mit viel Mühe zusammengetragen und vermittelt einen Einblick in das Leben und Wirken des Dichters. Und wer mit Literatur gar nichts anfangen kann, der kann den 360° Ausblick vom Dach den Turms genießen.

James Joyce begins his novel Ulysses in this Martello Tower in Sandycove, in which he had been living for a few days shortly before he left Ireland. The tenant at this time, Oliver St. John Gogarty, was a friend of Joyce. He was also the model for the novel's character Buck Mulligan.

In 1954 the architect Michael Scott bought the tower. Togehter with friends he founded a museum for James Joyce that was opened on Bloomsday - June, 16th - 1962. Entrance is free - a small donation is welcomed. The collection has been gathered with much effort and gives an insight into the life and work of the poet. And those who have no connection to literature at all can still admire the 360° view form the roof of the tower.
