Howth Hafen / Howth Harbour

Ireland's Eye

(2017-07-17)

We walk along the pier to the lighthouse at its end. A steady and heavy wind blows from the sea, the foam sprays some metres high, screaming doves hover over our heads. We deeply breathe in the salty air - this is certainly something differently from home. At the horizon we clearly see the small island of Ireland's Eye ("eye" comes from the language of the Vikings and means "island"). In the 6th century, monks built a monastery there; now it is a sanctuary for birds.
