Archeologische Funde zeigen, dass die Gegend von Skerries schon seit der Jungsteinzeit bewohnt ist. Die aufgezeichnete Geschichte von Skerries (Na Sceirí - felsige Insel) beginnt im 2. Jahrhundert mit einer fehlgeschlagenen Invasion.

Wichtiger war, dass 432 St. Patrick hier das erste Mal irischen Boden bei seiner Rückkehr als Missionar betrat und für einige Zeit auf St. Patrick's Island vor der Küste wohnte. St. Mochonna gründete ein Kloster, das im späten 8. Jahrhundert von den Dänen überfallen wurde. Die Dänen siedelten sich später hier an, wurden Christen und errichteten das Kloster neu.

Im 18. Jahrhundert kam Skerries in den Besitz der Familie Hamilton, die das Stadtbild zu seiner noch heute vorhandenen Form änderten. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde Skerries zu einem Erholungsort und einer Trabantenstadt von Dublin.

Archeological findings show that the area of Skerries has been inhabitated since the Neolithic. The recorded history of Skerries (Na Sceirí - rocky island) starts in the 2^nd century with a failed invasion.

Of more importance is the arrival of St. Patrick, who set here his foot on Irish soil for the first time after returning as missionary and even lived for a while on St. Patrick's Island close to the coast. St. Mochonna founded a monastery, that was raided by the Danes in the late 8^th century. Later the Danes settled down in this place, became Christians and rebuilt the monastery.

In the 18^th century Skerries came into the possession of the family Hamilton, who changed the townscape into its still present form. In the 20^th century, Skerries became both a resort town and a commuter town for Dublin.
