Die Geschichte von Ashtown Castle ist erst aber 1641 durch Schriftstücke belegt, als es im Besitz von John Connell, genannt John of Ashtown, war. Im späten 18. Jahrhundert wurde der Wohnturm modernisiert, erweitert und in Ashtown Lodge umbenannt. Es war die Residenz einflussreicher Personen, wie dem Under Secretary of Ireland, dem U.S. Botschafter und dem päpstlichen Nunzius. In 1978 musste Ashtown Lodge abgerissen werden, weil die Mauern von Trockenfäule befallen waren. Dabei wurde völlig überraschend der alte Wohnturm wieder entdeckt. Da seine Bausubstanz noch in Ordnung war, wurde er restauriert. Hecken um den Wohnturm markieren die Stellen, wo einst die Mauern von Ashtown Lodge waren.
The history of Ashtown Castle is only documented since 1641 when it was owned by John Connell, also called John of Ashtown. In the late 18th century the tower house was modernized, expanded and renamed to Ashtown Lodge. It was the residence of influential persons like the Under Secretary of Ireland, the U.S. Ambassador or the Papal Nuncio. In 1978 Ashford Lodge had to be demolished, as dry rot had befallen its walls. During the works, surprisingly the old tower house was rediscovered. As its building substance was still good, it was restored. Hedges around the tower house mark the spots where formerly the walls of Ashtown Lodge had been.
