Daniel O'Connell (Dónall Ó Conaill, 1775 – 1847) nutzte seinen Einfluss als Rechtsanwalt, um sich für die Gleichberechtigung der katholischen Iren einzusetzen. 1823 war er Mitbegründer der Katholischen Gesellschaft (Catholic Association), die bald starken Zuspruch bei gebildeten Katholiken fand und daher nicht von den Briten unterdrückt werden konnte. O'Connell setzte seine politische Laufbahn fort, deren Höhepunkte landesweite Versammlungen (z. B. in Tara) waren. Nach seiner dreimonatigen Inhaftierung 1844 musste er jedoch aus gesundheitlichen Gründen seine Ämter abgeben.
Daniel O'Connell (Dónall Ó Conaill, 1775 – 1847) used his influence as lawyer to campaign for the emancipation of the Catholic Irish. In 1823 he was co-founder of the Catholic Association that soon enjoyed much popularity with educated Catholics and hence could not be suppressed by the British. O'Connell continued his political career which culminated in mass gatherings all over the land (e.g. in Tara). After his imprisonment for three months in 1844 he had to step down from all his official duties due to failing health.
