When the Grand Canal was opened in 1779, its Dublin end was at James's Street Harbour, south of the area where the Guinness Brewery can still be found. On the canal the raw materials were delivered and the beers were shipped off, additionally the water of the canal was used for brewing. That part of the canal was abandoned after the Circular Line was finished in 1796. A few street names still remind of the old terminal.

The exit from the inner Grand Canal Basin (in the background) is displaced from the continuation below the Maquay Bridge. A broad basin allows boats to navigate around the sharp bends.

On a modern business building we see a bronze sculpture climbing up the wall. It is "Aspiration - The Climbing Woman" by Rowan Gillespie (#15 in the link).
