Statue von Theobald Wolfe Tone / Statue of Theobald Wolfe Tone
In the years following the American Independence War (1775-1783) and the French Revolution (1789-1799) the "Society of the United Irishmen" under their leader Theobald Wolf Tone demanded that all laws discriminating Catholics must be abolished. Wolfe Tone managed to get massive support in France and tried to restore Ireland's independency with the help of the French people twice: 1796 in the Bantry Bay and 1798 in Mayo. As a counteraction the British Government decided to remove the last remains of this independency. So, with the "Act of Union" (1800) the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was created. It was not before 1949 that the major part of the isle became an independent republic again.
