Kirche zum Hl. Mullins / St. Mullins Church
Normannische Motte / Norman Motte
When the Normans startet their conquest of Ireland, they came in 1170 also to the monastery of St. Mullins, which was situated on a strategically important crossing over the river Barrow. They built a wooden fortress on top of an artificially raised earthen mound (motte). On the open field beside it (bailey) a settlement developed in the course of the next years, which however never grew into a larger town.
