Baltimore

Die Gegend um Baltimore (Baile an Tí Mhóir - Stadt des großen Hauses) war schon in vorgeschichtlicher Zeit besiedelt. Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts übernahmen Anglo-Normannen die Macht in Cork, wurden jedoch knapp hundert Jahre später von rebellierenden irischen Clans vertrieben, danach regierten die O'Driscolls. Anfang des 17. Jahrhundert eroberten die Engländer den Süden Irlands und damit auch Baltimore. 1631 wurden bei einer Plünderung mehr als 100 Einwohner von Piraten verschleppt, die Überlebenden verließen die Stadt. Erst zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts erholte sich Baltimore wieder, bis die große Hungersnot auch hier ihren Tribut forderte.

Bei unserem Kurzbesuch 2015 präsentiert sich Baltimore als geschäftige Hafenstadt, die Besuchern alle möglichen Wassersportarten bietet.

The area around Baltimore (Baile an Tí Mhóir - town of the great house) was already populated in prehistoric time. At the end of the 12^th century Anglo-Normans took over the power in Cork, however were ousted by rebelling Irish clans less than hundred years later, afterwards the O'Driscolls reigned. At the beginning of the 17^th century British troops conquered the south of Ireland and with it Baltimore. During a raid by pirates in 1631 ("The Sack of Baltimore") more then 100 inhabitants were carried off, the survivors left the town. At the beginning of the 19th century Baltimore slowly recovered, until the Great Famine took its toll.

During our short visit in 2015 Baltimore presents itself as busy harbour town that offers all kinds of water activities to the visitors.
