Puxley Herrenhaus / Puxley Mansion

Etwas südlich von Castletown Bearhaven liegt Dunboy Castle (Caisleán Dhún Baoi) und Dunboy Wood. Die ehemalige Festung des O'Sullivan Beare Clans war die letzte, die den Engländern nach der Schlacht von Kinsale im Jahre 1601 standhielt. Sie fiel 1602. Im 19. Jahrhundert ließen die Kupferbarone Puxleys nahe dem Schloss ein Herrenhaus errichten, das jedoch nie fertiggestellt wurde; 1920 wurde es von Feuer zerstört.
Nach 2000 wurde das Anwesen von einer Investmentfirma aufgekauft, die das Herrenhaus zu einem Hotel umbauen und Luxusappartments errichten ließ. Die Finanzkrise beendete aber diesen Teil der Geschichte des Hauses.
Der Roman "Die Erben von Clonmere" ("Hungry Hill") über die Kupferbarone Broderick von Daphne du Maurier basiert auf dieser Gegend und Dunboy Castle könnte als Vorbild für Clonmere Castle gedient haben, da es ebenfalls in den Wirren des Kriegs abgebrannt wird. Als sein Besitzer John-Henry Broderick die Ruine sieht, schreibt Maurier:
Das Eigenartige war, dass aus etwas Entfernung die Wände seines Heims unberührt erschienen. Der Kamin stand, und alle Fenster, und es war erst beim Näherkommen, dass er sah, dass nichts im Inneren zurückgelassen worden war, und die Zimmerdecke war der Himmel. Doch das Fundament aller Räume war erhalten geblieben. Und er konnte zwischen dem Geröll gehen und jeden Raum erkennen, obwohl kein Raum erhalten geblieben war.
A short distance south of Castletown Bearhaven stands Dunboy Castle (Caisleán Dhún Baoi) and Dunboy Wood. The former stronghold of the O'Sullivan Bear clan was the last to hold out against the English after the battle of Kinsale in 1601. It fell in 1602. In the 19th century the copper barons Puxleys had a mansion built near the castle, but it was never completed; in 1920 it was destroyed by fire.
After 2000 the estate was purchased by an investment company that let the mansion refurbish as hotel and had built luxury apartments nearby. The financial crisis however ended this chapter of the history of the house.
The novel "Hungry Hill" about the copper barons Broderick by Daphne du Maurier is based upon this area and Dunboy Castle could have served as the model for Clonmere Castle, as it also is burnt down in the troubles of the war. When his owner John-Henry Broderick sees the ruins, Maurier writes:
The curious thing was that from a little distance the walls of his home appeared untouched. The chimney stood, and all the windows, and it was only on approaching closely that he could see that nothing had been left of the inside, and the ceiling was the sky. Yet the foundations of every room remained. And he could walk amongst the rubble and recognize each room, although no room remained.
