Belturbet Motte

(2006-07-26)

The panel directs us to a small isle in the Erne, on which the motte stands. It was erected in the years 1210 to 1211 by order of John Le Gray, the justiciar of John of England. It was one of several strongholds built by the Anglo-Normans to protect their conquest against the Irish men from Ulster.

The mound is overgrown, although some stairs are leading up the ascent, behind which are only dense plants. The bailey is also overgrown - and it locks as if a party had taken place. The only wastebasket is hopelessly overburdened, the remaining litter is scattered all around.
