Von der Burg, die von Familie Keane in den späten 1500ern gebaut wurde, ist nur mehr die Grundfeste erhalten. Zu dieser Zeit war die britische Herrschaft in Irland von einer sich abzeichnenden spanischen Invasion und von irischen Rebellionen bedroht. Nachdem die spanische Invasion 1588 gescheitert war, ankerten einige spanische Schiffe nahe Scattery Island, um Reparaturarbeiten auszuführen. Die lokale Bevölkerung verweigerten ihnen jedoch ihre Hilfe. So musste die La Anunciada (die Angekündigte) versenkt werden, da sie die Spanier nicht mehr repariert konnten.
There is little left but the foundations of the castle that was built in the late 1500s by the Keane family. At that time the British domination of Ireland was threatened by a looming Spanish invasion and by Irish rebellions. After the Spanish invasion in 1588 had failed, several Spanish ships dropped anchor close to Scattery Island to execute repair works. The local population however refused to help them. So the La Anunciada (the Announced One) had to be scuppered as the Spanish were not able to repair it.
