Die Kathedrale zur Hl. Maria wurde im 8. Jahrhundert gebaut, mit Änderungen und Erweiterungen bis ins 15. Jahrhundert. Sie war der Sitz des Bischofs von Scattery island. Nach der Invasion der Normannen am Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts verlor das Kloster schnell an Bedeutung. Das Bischofsamt wurde 1189 aufgelöst und Scattery Island dem Bischof von Killaloe unterstellt. Das endgültige Aus für das Kloster kam im 16. Jahrhundert unter Heinrich VIII.
An der Spitze des Ostfensters sind ein Bischofskopf und zwei Tiere zu sehen, die möglicherweise St. Senan und das Monster, das er vertrieb, darstellen.
St. Mary's Cathedral was built in the 8th century, with alterations and enlargements until the 15th century. It was the seat ot the Bishop of Scattery island. After the Norman invasion at the end of the 12th century, the monastery quickly lost its importance. The Bishop's See was abolished in 1189, Scattery Island was put under the control of the Bishop of Killaloe. The final end for the monastery came in the 16th century under Henry VIII.
At the apex of the east window a bishop's head and two animals can be seen, that probably depict St. Senan and the monster he banished.
