Killaloe
Killaloe (Cill Dalua - Kirche von Lua) geht auf eine Kirche des Hl. Lua aus dem 6. Jahrhundert zurück. Zur ersten Jahrtausendwende regierte König Brian Boru in Killaloe. Aufzeichnungen aus dieser Zeit erwähnen die Existenz einer Holzbrücke über den Shannon, die im 18. Jahrhundert durch eine Steinbrücke ersetzt wurde und Killaloe mit der Schwesternstadt Ballina verbindet.
Killaloe ist das untere Ende des schiffbaren Teils des Shannon. Hier holen sich die Touristen ihr Hausboot ab, mit dem sie dann eine oder zwei Wochen lang den Shannon bis nach Sligo hinauf und wieder herunter fahren.
Killaloe (Cill Dalua - church of Lua) traces back to a church by St. Lua in the 6th century. Around the turn of the 1st millennium King Brian Boru reigned in Killaloe. Records from that time mention the existence of a wooden bridge across the Shannon, which was replaced by a stone bridge in the 18th century that connects Killaloe with its twin-town Ballina.
Killaloe is the lower end of the navigable part of the Shannon. This is the place where tourists rent a houseboat to drive up to Sligo and down again the Shannon River for one or two weeks.
