Lough Derg

Lough Derg ist einer der beiden großen Seen, die vom Shannon durchflossen werden (der andere ist Lough Ree weiter im Norden). Von den zahlreichen Inseln, die im See liegen, ist Holy Island (Inis Cealtra - heilige Insel) die bekannteste. In vorchristlicher Zeit stand hier ein heiliger Eichenbaum, bei dem sich die Druiden versammelten. Im 7. Jahrhundert gründete der Hl. Caimin ein Kloster an dessen Stelle, und auf der kleinen Insel sind heute noch Ruinen von fünf Kirchen zu finden.

Lough Derg is one of the two large lakes, through which the Shannon is running (the other one is Lough Ree farther to the north). Many islands lie in the lake, but the most famous one is Holy Island (Inis Cealtra). In ancient times there stood a holy oak tree on the island, where druids used to meet. In the 7^th century St. Caimin founded a monastery on that very place, and on the tiny island are the remains of no less than five churches.
