The River Boyne (Abhainn na Bóinne) was named after the goddess Boann. It rises in Trinity Well in Newbury Demesne in Carbury. Or flows through the estate, the sources in the internet do not agree with each other. During the journey of about 112 kilometres until its mouth at Mornington Strand, the River Boyne passes along many historically important places, like the great burial tombs in Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, the former seat of the highking on Tara, the Hill of Slane, where St. Patrick lit his first Easter fire, and also Drogheda, where the fate of Ireland was sealed by William of Orange during the Battle of the Boyne.
